Warli Art
Warli is a tribe concentrated in the coastal belt of Northern Maharashtra. The traditional art form – comprising of drawings in a uniquely interesting system of depiction – is believed to be about a thousand years’ old. By now, quite famous around the world, it was discovered only in the last 50 years. Artifacts made in terra-cotta as also painted on paper, cloth or other surfaces are now creating waves in the art world.
GRAMMANGAL, working in the heart of this belt, has a special affinity to the art. It has encouraged and promoted artisans in the art to market their skills. A volunteer from Italy, Laura Gallo, helped in the discovery of this potential and popularizing their ancient art.
